443 km2   Separated by a few nautical miles, Antigua and Barbuda are in the
   middle of the Leeward Islands, part of the Lesser Antilles, roughly at
   17 degrees north of the Equator. The country is nicknamed "Land of 365
   Beaches" due to the many beaches surrounding the islands.

    Antigua and Barbuda, having served in that position since the islands'
   independence from the United Kingdom in 1981. The Queen is currently
   represented by Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack (1944-) who
   became the first woman to hold this position.

   Background:
   The Siboney were the first to inhabit the islands of Antigua and
   Barbuda in 2400 B.C., but Arawak Indians populated the islands when
   COLUMBUS landed on his second voyage in 1493.

    brought Antigua and Barbuda and the Caribbean into a new era of
   independence.
   The Judicial Branch is the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (based in

   common law.

    Antigua and Barbuda is a three-island nation located in the eastern
   Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean. The area of
   Antigua and Barbuda is 171 square miles (442 square kilometers), two
   and a half times the size of Washington, D.C..
  Antigua and Barbuda was colonized by the
   British in 1632 and endured slavery through the years of sugar
   plantations. Slavery was abolished in 1834, but the lack of an
   appropriate transition program left former slaves impoverished.
    Antigua and Barbuda is part of the Commonwealth of Nations and its
   currency is the East Caribbean Dollar.
    Antigua and Barbuda (Spanish for Ancient and Bearded) is an island
   nation located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, on the sea's boundary
   with the Atlantic Ocean.
    The islands of Antigua and Barbuda are part of the Lesser Antilles
   archipelago. To the south of Antigua and Barbuda lie the islands of
   Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the
   Grenadines, Barbados, Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago.

   Antigua, the larger of the two main islands, is 108 sq mi (280 sq km).
    Antigua and Barbuda joined the West Indies Federation in 1958. With
   the breakup of the federation, it became one of the West Indies
   Associated States in 1967, self-governing its internal affairs. Full
   independence was granted Nov. 1, 1981.
